About personal training
Personal training can be an excellent tool to help you reach your fitness goals in a safe and effective manner. A personal trainer can be of assistance to athletes of various levels and ages – ranging from a beginner taking the first steps of his/her fitness journey all the way to a professional athlete competing at an international level.
For a beginner enthusiast just starting their fitness journey, a personal trainer can help you set realistic and motivating goals, assess your current level of fitness and various physical capabilities (pointing out weaknesses and helping turn them into strengths), plan and adjust your work volume and intensity to help you progress safely and effectively, help you with exercise selection and teach you the safe and optimal movement patterns for these exercises.
In the case of an intermediate level athlete, a personal trainer can help you further improve and optimise your movement patterns and identify possible weaknesses in both your training programming as well as your physical fitness, thereby reducing the risk of injury and helping you progress faster and more and in a well-balanced manner.
For a high-level or professional athlete, a personal trainer may be an irreplaceable asset, helping an athlete reduce the risk of injury (both misuse and overuse type), identify potential weaknesses in their physical capabilities and helping them become more well-rounded athletes without any loss in their sport-specific performance.
The main tools in a personal trainer’s toolkit are the following:
- identifying the goals, needs, resources and restrictions of every individual client;
- helping the client set realistic and motivating training goals;
- creating a training plan to help the client reach his/her set goals, while taking into account the individual needs, requests and restrictions of the client;
- assessing various aspects of the client’s physical fitness and capabilities both when starting the fitness journey as well as assessing progress throughout the training plan;
- helping the client with exercise selection, while taking into account the client’s current level of fitness and his/her goals and preferences;
- teaching the proper, safe and optimal movement patterns for the selected exercises as well as correcting form when necessary;
- programming and adjusting training volume and intensity to help the client reach his/her goals in a safe and effective manner;
- teaching the basics of anatomy, biomechanics, kinesiology and sports physiologyto help the client thoroughly understand the exercise adaptations required to reach his/her goals;
- assessing recovery and helping the client improve his/her methods of recovery and stress;
- etc.
When taking into consideration the fact, that one of the primary purposes of personal training is to help the client reach his/her fitness goals in a safe and effective manner, I would say that programming the training plan to conform with the work and life schedule of each individual client is one of the most important aspects of training programming. That is why, when selecting the exercises, equipment required and location for the client’s training, I always base my selection on the following motto: “the best exercise is the one, that will actually be performed in practice and the best possible training plan or method is the one that the client will actually be able to follow in a real-life setting“. That means that I always strive to make sure that I program the client’s training in a way, that the client will actually be able to fit into his/her already busy schedule and therefore be able to fill his/her “health bucket” without draining the “family”, “hobbies” and “work buckets”. For some clients, this means a daily 25-minute “at-home” workout with zero-to-no-equipment that covers all the bases and can be done in the early morning before heading off to work. For others, it may be an hour-long thorough workout with various pieces of equipment in a gym setting for three times per week.

The necessary amount of sessions with a personal trainer is highly dependent on the client’s level, training goals, previous skills and knowledge and available resources. Due to this, it is difficult to point out a certain amount of sessions necessary as a general recommendation. However in most cases, it is possible to point out an estimate within the first session.
